GOLDEN MEMORIAL PARK OFFERS AURA OF TRANQUILITY
On November 6, 1945, W. A. Ellis, who was a
descendant of early settlers of
the Walnut Grove area, deeded forty acres
in Leake County to the State of
Mississippi to be used for a park. The
donation was made in memory of the
patrons, pupils, teachers and friends of
the old Golden School and their
descendants. The Golden school house stood
on a black-jack hill on the
northern edge of Scott County, Ms. It was
so named in honor of Dr. William
Golden the grandfather of Mr. Ellis.
Mr. Ellis was a poet and he wrote
this about the Golden School:
This sacred spot, this
quiet place
Of hill and trees around
Where memory can clearly trace
The Golden school house ground----
The school has long since passed away---
The ground o'er grown with oak and pine
Mute sentinels by night and day
That guard this spot almost divine.
This is a park to enjoy the
quiet and simply listen to the many sounds of nature. Nestled in
a vale surrounded with pine and hardwood trees, Golden Park
consists of 120 acres - 105 acres of park and a 15 acre lake.

The park will especially
appeal to nature lovers. It is a perfect place to picnic and
walk. There are many picnic tables
available and two pavilions for use. The lake is well stocked
and there is a boat landing and several fishing piers.
Beside serving as home to an abundant supply of wildlife, one of
the largest loblolly pines in the state is in Golden Park. It is
a small park in terms of size and its recreational facilities
are limited but the sheer beauty of the park and its special
atmosphere make this a worthwhile stop.
